Introduction to my Coding Blog

Updated: Sep 9, 2019

To get this blog started, I want to talk a little more about my experience and what I'm doing. Although I realized the nine to five work day isn't for me, I didn't want to just ditch it. And I'll talk a bit more about everything I though about and did to set myself up remotely in another post. But long story short, I still work at my same job as before, but just without the constraints of having to be in an office every day at the same time.

So what is my job? I work as a Quantitative Analyst in the Market Intelligence Department of a bank. And yes, I know, I'm very used to blank or confused faces when I say that. Well let's break it down a little more. I'd say the type of work that I do can be broken into two categories - analytics and automation/development. On the analytics side, we're responsible for trying to figure out how to get and retain customers. We work on things like direct marketing pieces (mail, email, calls), underwriting, and profitability. On the automation/development side, there are a ton of everyday or routine processes that are done to support our work. And until I started working there, all these things were done manually and it was someone's full time job to do it. So, I started automating things and have been developing mini service tools to support that work. Examples are a bot to run and manage everything, a project management web tool, and web tools to make data entry much easier. So as you can tell, data and programming are my bread and butter.

On a daily basis, I work with SQL, Python and R. And I've been working with git and gitlab to try and create a better development/collaborative workflow. I'll also work often with API's and since I create web apps, I'll work with HTML, CSS, and Javascript as well.

Because I do work in the financial industry, a lot of the work that I do is highly confidential. So that does make it hard for me to actually share what I'm working on with everyone. But please bear with me! I've started working on some side projects and I'd love to start creating a portfolio out of that and be able to blog about it. It will be slow though, since I do work my day job and travelling around at the same time.

When I was trying to figure out how to make this lifestyle of working remotely and travelling the world and with the career I had, there wasn't much resources out there to help me figure it out. And even the way I got into my career, it wasn't the normal path. I feel passionate about sharing my experiences with others so that maybe it can help provide others similar in career, ambition or lifestyle, with something to help them.

So stick around and follow me as I figure this all out and hopefully I can share my first side project with you all soon! And thank you for taking the time to read this! :)
